It's fine to make time for yourself
Looking after yourself is part of looking after your family.
Many single parents feel guilty about wanting time for themselves. But a happier, more relaxed parent is good for everyone. Dating doesn't have to take over your life. It just needs a little space in it.
Chat in the gaps
Online dating fits around family life better than most.
- Message after bedtime. The quiet hour at the end of the day is often the best time to chat.
- Use spare minutes. A reply while you wait at the school gates or during a lunch break all adds up.
- Be honest about when you're around. Letting people know you mostly chat in the evenings saves any confusion.
Dates that fit around your week
A date doesn't have to be a night out.
- Daytime dates. A coffee or a walk during school hours can be easier than an evening out.
- Weekends without the children. If you share care, plan dates for the times your children are with their other parent.
- Early evenings. A drink straight after work, and home in time for bedtime.

Sorting out childcare
A sitter you trust means you can relax and enjoy yourself.
Grandparents, family and close friends are often happy to help, especially for a couple of hours. Some parents take turns babysitting for each other. Whoever you choose, make sure it's someone you'd trust completely, so you're not distracted while you're out.
Don't ask someone you're dating to help with childcare until you know them well and you're sure about them. Keeping the two separate for now is the safest choice.
